Grieving Mom Shares Lesson from Tragic Accident

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

It was a somber day for friends and family of 13-year old Jonathan Chapa Flores, as they paid their final respects to the young man who was killed tragically last week in an accident.

A funeral mass for Flores was held Monday at the Most Precious Blood Catholic Church.

"I'm very devastated, heartbroken," said Erica Moya, Flores' mother. "The accident happened so quick."

It was last Thursday that Flores was killed when, according to police, the sport utility vehicle he was riding in ran a red light and was struck at the corner of Morgan and Santa Fe.

Police revealed on Monday that Moya's boyfriend was actually driving the SUV at the time of the collision. Moya said the light wasn't red, but yellow. Police are still investigating.

At the funeral on Monday, Moya had a message to share with parents.

"No mother or father should ever go through this tragedy," she said. "everybody needs to be wearing their seat belts. And I've told him over and over again, and this is the outcome of it."

Moya described her son as a loving, outgoing and independent young man.

"He was a very good cook," Moya said. "He loved to cook. He cooked for us the night before this happened. Just always happy and outgoing. Wanted to do anything and everything to please everybody."

An account has been set up at the Coastal Community and Teachers Credit Union for people to donate to help the family cover the funeral costs. It is under the name Jonathan Chapa Flores.
