Students and faculty of a Port Arthur elementary school began the day Tuesday at another campus because of a crime that happened near the school.

Port Arthur I.S.D. Spokesperson Kristyn Hunt tells 12NewsNow.Com, as buses arrived at Tyrrell Elementary this morning, they were re-directed to the Thomas Jefferson Middle School campus. Hunt said the district did this because the Port Arthur SWAT team was called to a home near the campus. Hunt did not know why SWAT was called to the house.

A news release issued by the Port Arthur Police Department says it all started with a 911 call from a home located at 3110 North Park reporting a burglary. The person who lives at the house fled when they heard the burglars, however, it was believed that at least one burglar remained inside the home.

The Port Arthur Police SWAT team was called after the burglar refused to come out.

Officers fired "chemical agents" into the home and the suspect still refused to come out.

Just after 6 a.m. SWAT officers made entry into the home and found a man, identified as Milton Stevenson, 41, of Port Arthur, hiding in the house. He was taken to the Jefferson County Jail and charged with burglary of a habitation.

Officers say all of this took place before school hours, but because it happened close to Tyrrell Elementary School, it was decided by school personnel to move the kids to the auditorium at Thomas Jefferson Middle School until all traces of the chemical agent used had dissipated.

No one was hurt in the incident.

The students were returned to the Elementary campus once the all-clear was given.
