Voter registration ends Tuesday

Posted: Updated:

Tuesday marks exactly four weeks until election day but if you are not registered to vote by the end of the day then you will not be able to have a say in this historic presidential race.

Calls have been flooding the voter registration office with questions on what to do and where to go as soon-to-be voters take advantage of their last chance to sign up to vote in this year's election.

"I've never registered to vote before but i feel as though this election my vote is going to count," said Beaumont resident Lemelle James.

For years James thought her vote would get lost in the crowd and just didn't matter but this year her mindset has changed.

"I feel as though this election we all need to go out there and vote if we want to see a change."

"Everyone needs to vote, everyone needs to register to vote," said Port Arthur resident Tina Simon.

Other Jefferson County residents like Simon came to check on their voter status.

If you've changed your address you must update your voter registration card.

"Check on your paperwork, make sure everything is in order so that you can be a registered voter and you can make a difference," said Simon.

According to the Jefferson County Clerk's office more than 146,000 residents have registered to vote in the November 6th election.

That number includes the more than 3,000 who have registered in the last month alone.

"If we didn't vote then we can't complain about anything that happens after the elections so we're going to make our voice heard," said Simon.

To make sure your voice is heard at election time your voter registration application postmark must read October 9th to make the deadline.

You can also register to vote at the sub-courthouse on Lakeshore Drive in Port Arthur, at the tax office in Mid-County and at any post office or public library.

The Jefferson County voters registration office on the first floor of the courthouse will be open for extended hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
