Information About Arrested Stepmother's History Surfaces

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Information has come out regarding the past life of Laura Day, the stepmother of six-year old Taylor Syring, who drowned near Bob Hall Pier this past Friday.

Day was arrested Tuesday, and charged with the endangerment death of the six-year old boy. She made bond, and was home on Wednesday.

Day was not able to reached by phone, but her husband, David Syring was reached at their 6,000 square foot home on the Island.

After checking into an anonymous tip, it was discovered that Laura Day had been convicted of second-degree murder back in 1982, after killing her boyfriend in an apparent murder-suicide attempt.

A newspaper account said she did it because she wanted the two to be buried together. Instead, the boyfriend died and she spent about six years in a youth prison. She was released and headed back to her Baltimore home.

Eventually, Day would be arrested for insurance fraud after she burned her car to collect the insurance money. She was also convicted in Maryland for bigamy.

"I'm having a hard time dealing with my son's passing as it is, and to just find this out, it is even more difficult," said David Syring, Laura Day's husband.

"Her history can only be brought up in the punishment phase if she is convicted, so we can't really bring that into the investigation just yet," said Lt. Rebeca Schauer of the Corpus Christi Police Department.

Family members said that David Syring moved into his wife's home after the two met and then married in August. Authorities said he told them that he Googled his wife's name over the summer, and found out about the murder conviction.

Syring told police she had explained to him that someone else had shot her boyfriend and had shot at her.

Taylor Syring will be buried on Saturday at Memory Gardens. Investigators said that, when the medical examiner looked at the boy's body, he found things that were questionable. So a number of tests were done, and those results should be back in by December.
