Seventh Case of West Nile Confirmed in Nueces County

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The City-County Health Department confirmed that a seventh person in Nueces County has come down with the West Nile virus this year.

They said it is a woman in her 50s, and that she is now in the hospital.

Dr. William Burgin, public health authority, said that once you're hospitalized with the virus, doctors can only treat the symptoms that pop up as a result of West Nile. That means giving you something to keep the fever down, or medicine for anxiety.

Burgin also told us that West Nile virus is still turning up in mosquito samples that are being taken all around town.

We have had a bit of rain the past few weeks, and that is going to continue to help the mosquitos breed for a while longer. Burgin recommends that you stay indoors at dusk and dawn. That's when the mosquitoes are out in force.

Also, a bug spray with DEET in it is the most effective way to keep the insects from attacking you and your family.

71 people have died from the virus in Texas alone this year. Over 1,500 cases have been confirmed so far.

Here's an interesting fact about West Nile: 80-percent of people who get it won't show any symptoms at all, but for those who do, they can be sick for several weeks and could even die from the single bite of a mosquito.
