ALICE (Kiii News) -

Organizers of the fifth annual Heeling Walk in Alice are calling the event a success.

More than 250 people gathered at the Jim Wells County Courthouse on Thursday to raise awareness in the battle against breast cancer.

The goal of the event was to educate people and get across the message that early detection, self breast examination and annual mammograms can and do save lives.

Miss Jim Wells County was there singing lyrics from the song "Blessings," at the Alice Mothers Club Heeling Walk.

As part of the event, there was a contest for the most original, best pink and outrageous heels, although walking in heels was optional. $10 donations were also recommended, with the money going towards gifts for cancer patients.

There were 24 breast cancer survivors at the walk, including Judge Luz Paiz, Justice of the Peace for Orange Grove, and Margo Rios, Chief Nursing Officer for Christus Spohn in Alice.

"I'm here to inspire other women that have been recently diagnosed that there is life after breast cancer," Paiz said.

"The advice I'd like to give every woman is choose something special, like I chose my birthday month, as the month that I would remind myself to get my mammogram done, and because of that I'm a survivor and here today," Rios said.

Rios said using tactics like that, which enable you to remember to get checked, can save your life. Organizers of the event said the more awareness is raised about breast cancer prevention, the more lives can be saved.

Alice Echo-News provided some video footage of the event.
