Blessing of La Niña at the Corpus Christi Bayfront
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -
The president of the Columbus Sailing Association said they are planning to have the smallest of the Columbus ship replicas, the Niña, seaworthy again by next year.
The vessel is currently docked in the Corpus Christi Marina. A ceremony was held Friday to bless the ship on what used to be the day we all observed as Columbus Day, Oct. 12.
John Torrey, with the Columbus Sailing Association, said the restoration process is just about complete.
"It's been gratifying, every week that we make progress working in 105-degree heat, but we are making progress and we want everyone to come down and see," Torrey said. "And we hope to be sailing this vessel next spring."
Torrey said Oct. 12 is recognized as the day Christopher Columbus actually landed in America.
