Body found in LNVA Canal believed to be missing man

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: Officials believe a body found Monday in the LNVA canal is that of a driver whose pickup truck went into the waterway over the weekend.

The body was found in the LNVA Canal about 100 yards west of where the canal goes under Major drive.

Police say Stephen Dvorman, 27, of Warren, has been missing since Saturday morning when witnesses said they saw him in the water after the truck went in.  That was the last time anyone reported seeing him.

Beaumont police and firefighters were called to the canal at Eastex Freeway around 1:30 a.m. Saturday. Divers and other rescue workers have been searching since the accident.

This is a developing story.  12News HD will have more information as it is released by officials.

The following news release was issued by the Beaumont Police Department on Sunday evening:

At 11:59 pm on Friday October 12, 2012, Beaumont Police received a 911 call from witnesses advising that a pickup had gone off into the LNVA canal.

The witnesses were driving northbound on Eastex Freeway and they observed a silver Ford F-150 pickup traveling northbound on the service road.  They advised the truck did not follow the roadway under the overpass, but had gone straight over the curb, up the embankment, and into the water.  The witnesses stopped on the bridge and yelled out to the driver asking if he was alright.  The driver waved back to the witnesses and said "yes".  The witness told the driver to get out of the vehicle because it is sinking, and it was drifting toward the bridge.  She asked the driver if he had gotten out of the vehicle after the vehicle had drifted out of their view under the bridge.  He answered yes, but soon after that the witnesses heard the sound of the water as the truck went completely under.  At that time police units arrived and the witness advised the driver, but there was no more responses.  Police got up to the bank with flashlights, but there was no sign of the truck nor the driver.

Beaumont Fire and Rescue arrived, and all first responders started searching the area while some went into the water to find the vehicle.  The vehicle was found and there was still no sign of the driver, as it was determined the vehicle was unoccupied.  After an extensive search of the whole area, it was determined to suspend it until sunlight.

The next morning, (Saturday) the vehicle was brought out of the water, boats with sonar searched the bottom of the canal, and Beaumont Police Canine units, including the bloodhound "Liz", assisted in an area search, but the driver was not found.

This portion of the canal was less than a quarter mile from the Plant Rd. pump station which, at the time, was pumping about 10 million gallons of water per hour into the section of the canal, however, with that distance it is hard to determine how much it effected the current where the truck went under.

At this time, 7:00 PM on Sunday, there are still police units in the area to patrol the banks for some sign.

The missing driver is 27 year old Stephen Dvorman of Warren Texas.  He is 6'2" and has a slender build.  He was last seen wearing a blue shirt and blue jeans.  Any information on his location should be forwarded to the Beaumont Police Department.
