Tejano Music Exhibit Opened at Ben McDonald Library

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

It is a big part of South Texas Culture: Tejano music.

An exhibit was unveiled and part of the ben McDonald Library was dedicated to the music of South Texas. It is a first for Corpus Christi as it is opened in a public institution.

The exhibit included photographs of Tejano artists, promoters and pioneer record producers who strongly influenced the evolution of Tejano music, as far back as the 1930s. The idea for the project is that history has to be preserved, and in the case of Tejano music, it is not only an art, but it is also an oral history.

"As long as the people have an identity, and Tejano definitely has an identity, I think it's important that our heritage be kept alive and be remembered, and be revered really," said Dr. Manuel Pena. "When it comes to music, we have a musical heritage that is unparalleled in the United States."

The program was made possible in part by a grant from the Humanities of Texas.
