Wounded Veterans Treated to Port Mansfield Hunting Trip

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A group of wounded soldiers are getting some much needed R&R this week. All eight of them were injured during combat and have been in the hospital for weeks; some even longer.

Through a program called Combat Marine Outdoors, they are getting a break from the stress of recovery and going on a hunting trip.

A total of 50 Patriot Guard Riders from Corpus Christi lead the way to recovery for the eight wounded marines.

"It really means a lot to us, to get out of the hospital and just get away from the hospital situation," said Kenneth Kalish, a wounded veteran.

Kalish was one of the eight injured soldiers headed to Port Mansfield for a hunting trip. He stepped on an IED during his last mission in Afghanistan. The trip is aimed at helping his recovery.

"We come together to show them that, after the military, there is a way," said Arturo Garcia of Combat Marine Outdoors.

Garcia knows what it's like to go to war. He was one of the Patriot Guard Riders escorting the wounded soldiers to their destination.

"All these warriors are sitting in a hospital recovering from their wounds in Afghanistan, or around the world," Garcia said. "We give them an opportunity to get out of the hospital, laugh, and maybe hunt."

The Patriot Guard Riders met up with the Marines at the San Antonio Military Medical Center and escorted them to Port Mansfield. Their presence means a lot to soldiers like Kalish.

"We are just giving back to our brothers who have given so much for our country," Garcia said.

Combat Marines Outdoors does about two different trips like this each year.
