Stepmother of Drowning Victim Makes First Court Appearance

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The Corpus Christi woman under investigation for the death of her stepson while he was under her care, made her first court appearance Monday.

"I know that it is this court's custom to impose a condition that the defendant have no contact with minor children," Prosecutor Brittany Jensen said.

Laura Day, 47, stood before 94th District Court Judge Bobby Galvan as she was informed of her bond conditions, which prohibit her from being around her 14-year old son.

Day faces a charge of child endangerment, after six-year old Taylor Syring drowned near Bob Hall Pier while under her care. The boy's father, David Syring, was with Day during Monday's court appearance.

Day has had a checker passed. She was convicted of murder in the early 80s when she was a teenager living in California. She was also convicted of bigamy while living in Maryland, and insurance fraud.

Investigators are waiting on test results from Syring's autopsy. The prosecutor in the case said, depending on what those results show, Day could be facing additional charges. For now, she remains free on bond.

Day's attorney, Gaby Canales, is asking that her client be allowed to prepare her case.

"A person has a right to a defense, you know," Canales said. "In this country, we have soldiers who fight for that right, and in many countries you don't have that ability. And she's absolutely innocent until proven guilty, and she has a right to have a defense, and we would just ask that people respect that right and let her side be heard also."

Another condition of Day's bond is that she can be no closer than 100 yards from any church. Day happens to live out on the Island, and very close to a church, so on Tuesday, probation officers will be out there with measuring tape in hand to determine whether Day meets that bond condition.
