An advisory committee gave its recommendation Thursday as to what the route will be for the new Harbor Bridge.
The Texas Department of Transportation will have the ultimate say, but on Thursday, the Technical Advisory Committee voted in favor of the "red route," which would extend Crosstown directly over the ship channel, and then connect back to 181 on the other side. The goal is to improve the safety of the Harbor Bridge.
"It would be closer to Port Avenue. Open up the inner harbor, the Ortiz Center, the baseball stadium," Transportation Planning Director Tom Niskala said. "There would not be a height restriction for ships leaving or entering the harbor. We feel that would be beneficial to the economic vitality of the community and the port."
Again, Tx-DOT is currently in the planning phase of the project. Construction wouldn't begin until the year 2017 at the earliest.
