CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

It was a big shot in the arm for the Corpus Christi Police Athletic League, courtesy of Valero. The oil giant donated just over $76,000 to the Athletic League on Thursday.

The funds came from the second annual Valero/CC-PAL Dove Hunt, which took place earlier this month.

CC-PAL is an organization that helps at-risk kids through athletics.

"It was a crime fighting tool, or still is a crime fighting tool, that we use to try to reach these kids at an early age, where we as police officers hopefully won't have to deal with them out on the streets in a criminal manner," said David Morris of the Corpus Christi Police Department. "So a lot of times, they don't see us a police officer. They see as someone going out and playing baseball and basketball with them, or mentoring them in these types of sports."

The group helps more than 2,000 children a year, and operates solely on donations.
