Early voting starts Monday

Posted: Updated:

For the next two weeks voters in Southeast Texas will have the chance to vote early ahead of the general election.

The Jefferson County Clerk's Office says during the 2008 general election more than 50% of the total votes casted came from voters who voted early.

A number of area voters told 12 News HD the presidential race was the race drawing them to the polls this election year.

As of Sunday night, in a total of three debates, the United States has seen the two political heavyweights and their right hand men battle it out for the people's vote.

President Barack Obama is seeking re-election and Mitt Romney is looking to take over as Commander in Chief.

Texas voters will have their first chance to cast ballots starting Monday during early voting. For the first time since 1981, Sherry Cupps is going to vote.

"As a young woman I didn't vote because I didn't believe it would count. I've seen presidents get elected on delegates and not on the people's vote. I need to do something this time whether my vote makes a difference or not," Cupps said.

According to the Jefferson County Clerks Office, 58% of registered voters casted their ballots in the 2008 general election.

More than half of those came in early voting.

While a majority of voters are expected to vote early, others like Grandmother Barbara Simien are keeping things traditional.

"That's the way I've always done it, I go vote on election day," Simien said.
