Health Insurance Main Topic at CCISD Board Meeting

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Health insurance is a key issue in the presidential race, and also at the Corpus Christi Independent School District headquarters Monday.

"If they had another insurance company, we wouldn't have to fight like this," said Ray McMurrey of the Corpus Christi Federation of Teachers. "We want real insurance."

School officials called a special meeting to discuss the future of the employees' health insurance for next year. The school board had several options to look through.

Some school members and employees were angry that they didn't have enough time to look over those options. They were particularly upset that the meeting was held during work hours, and it didn't give employees a chance to voice their opinion.

"I just felt that the timing was bad," said Lucy Rubio, of the CCISD Board of Trustees. "We didn't have the correct information. We didn't have a time to read the information. Employees who are working at noon can't come and express their concern. It was a special called meeting on what they had to say."

Ultimately, the board decided to remain a self-funded health care school district with Blue Cross Blue Shield.
