CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

It usually happens on the day after Halloween, but on Wednesday, some kids at the Incarnate Word Academy were celebrating Dia de los Muertos.

It's a religious holiday, also known as All Souls Day or Day of the Dead. Students at the school have been working all month long to create an alter. They learned the significance and meaning of the holiday.

"With the alter, all the kids are remembering their loved ones," IWA student Madeline Brown said. "Even their fish and their dog."

"I didn't know that candles were such an important factor," IWA student Kristen Biggins said. "It lights up the graves and it's more of the remembrance of the person who died."

The holiday is celebrated worldwide by Catholic churches.
