FROM TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY-CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents approved a ground lease Friday for construction of additional student housing at the Island University.
The University will lease approximately 3.6 acres to Camden Property Trust, a Texas real estate investment trust, to build additional privatized on-campus housing. The project, located near Island Hall, will include four buildings with 300 additional beds and will be built in two phases over two years. This semester, on-campus housing managed by Camden, has been fully leased with additional students on a waiting list.
"Our continued enrollment growth, including our record-breaking freshman class this fall, calls for us to further serve our students with the additional on-campus housing they've asked for," said Dr. Flavius Killebrew, President/CEO of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
As part of the effort to increase student engagement and success, University leaders intend to require most first-year students to live on campus. Currently, the campus has space for about 14 percent of its student population.
"We know that students who live on-campus usually have a higher GPA than those living off-campus. We want to expand the environment that encourages success in the classroom and engagement within the University among students, faculty and staff," said Dr. Killebrew.
The first phase will include two buildings and a parking lot that will be ready for the fall 2013 semester. The second phase will include two more buildings that will be completed by fall 2014.
