The Beaumont Police Department has confirmed a child brought a gun to school on Thursday.
According to Beaumont Police Officer Rob Flores, a police report was made after being notified by Harmony Science Academy that the gun was found on campus.
Police say the student said the gun was brought by mistake.
The student's parents were notified and the gun was returned it to its owner.
Flores says the school did notify parents of the incident.
12 News contacted Harmony Science Academy. A spokesperson for the school sent 12 News the following statement:
"Yesterday, Nov. 1, a student unknowingly brought weapons to school while attempting to return a backpack that was believed to belong to another student. The unopened backpack had been left at the student's home the previous evening. The backpack did not belong to a student at our school and, upon searching the backpack to identify the owner, a handgun and a knife were discovered. School administrators and security were notified immediately, and the police were called.
"At Harmony Public Schools, the safety of our students is always our first priority. In this situation, proper procedure was followed, and the matter is now under police investigation.
"We will also review the matter internally to identify potential improvements to our safety policies and procedures."
