The issue of how to spend hotel tax dollars came up at another meeting at City Hall on Monday.
The City was putting on a taxpayer education day for owners and managers of local hotels. They are now using a private company to collect and track those hot tax monies, but one of the owners who does business on North Beach wondered why the taxes they collect there are not used to clean up the area along our bay.
"Hotel taxes go to cleaning up and maintaining the Gulf beaches, and they omit the bay beaches, and on our bay beaches we have some major hotels," said Joann Gilbertson, the owner of a North Beach condo.
"One of the restrictions is that it can only be used for the cleaning of Gulf beaches," Assistant City Manager Oscar Martinez said. "Along Corpus Christi Beach, that not being a Gulf beach, it's not eligible under State law for hotel tax to do some beach cleaning."
Martinez said the City may take a look at what it would take to change state law to allow it to use the hotel tax money to clean the beaches along the bay.
