Father and Son Rescued from Packery Channel

Posted: Updated:

A man in his 20's is recovering after he nearly drowned Saturday night at the Packery Channel.

Roger Bryning, a witness told 3 News, "It sounded like a guy being torched.  I couldn't figure it out.  It just sounded like a guy being murdered.  Your mind just speculates."

Investigators say the victim and his father were fishing off the boat ramp at Packery Channel when the son slipped and fell into the water.  It happened just west of the jetties.  His father jumped in to save him, but didn't notice there was a 10-foot drop off.  A passerby then had to jump in to help the two men.  When rescue crews arrived, the two were pulled to safety.

Corpus Christi Fire Fighter Gary Mohler said, "the bystanders were able to put a tow hitch around him.  He was a big guy so it gave us leverage to put him in the boat.  The victim had a head wound, and abrasions to the upper body from holding onto barnacles that saved his life."

Both the father and son are expected to be okay.
