Officials are calling the 24-hour Coastal Bend Day of Giving effort to raise money for local charities a success.
The generosity of the Coastal Bend was well on display during the fundraising event Tuesday, which lasted from midnight to midnight.
In total, officials said more than 3,900 answered the call to help local nonprofit organizations address the needs of the hungry and the homeless. Collectively, the community donated more than $562,000 during the Coastal Bend Day of Giving, while $310,000 was match by 15 area foundations.
Overall, the grand total was more than $872,000. Organizers said this will make a deep impact throughout the Coastal Bend.
"It'll go to buying food at the food bank, providing diaper cream for the children's shelters, provide food and blankets at the homeless shelters," said Karen Selim of the Coastal Bend Community Foundation.
A check distribution will be made in early December. There is a list of 30 different organizations that will benefit from the event.
