Two confirmed dead following major I-10 accident

Posted: Updated:

JEFFERSON COUNTY, TEXAS - The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has confirmed at least two people have died and over 100 injured following a massive multi-car pileup that shut down Interstate 10 near Hamshire (at Mile Marker 835) Thanksgiving morning.

The first collision happened shortly after 8 a.m.  As other cars began slamming into the mess, the number of vehicles involved quickly began to ad up.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy Rod Carroll Thursday afternoon confirmed to 12 News that a man and a woman died from their injuries.  The Department of Public Safety has identified them as Vincent Joseph Leggio, 64, and his wife Debra Leggio, 60, of Pearland.  The couple was killed when their SUV was struck from behind by an 18-wheeler.

SCOPE OF ACCIDENT

The Department of Public Safety early in its response said at least 50 cars were involved in the accident.  By 10:45 a.m. the DPS updated the number to at least 140 cars involved in the collision.  Several hundred more cars and drivers were left stranded on the scene.

All east and westbound lanes were closed for hours after the accident.  The westbound lanes of the Interstate re-opened shortly after noon.  The eastbound lanes were opened late in the afternoon.

Denise Richter with Acadian Ambulance says Acadian took 52 patients to five different hospitals.  At least five people transported by Acadian were in critical condition.

COMPLICATIONS

Kelly Sonnier with Labelle Fannett Volunteer Fire and EMS said an 18-wheeler tanker truck began leaking following the accident.  Emergency workers made everyone get at least 100 feet from the truck until they could confirm what chemical the truck was carrying.  No injuries resulted from the leaked chemical.

FOG A FACTOR

The DPS reports there was dense fog in the area at the time of the initial collision.   Investigators on Thursday said they believe this is what led to the collision.
