Training for New Mayor, City Council Members

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

There are four new City Council members and a new mayor in Corpus Christi.

During their swearing-in ceremony, some wondered if they were ready to tackle the topics on the table at their first Council meeting.

There is actually some training that Council members go through to be able to do their job. Coming up on Dec. 7, the Texas Municipal League is offering training sessions for new office holders across the state. It will be held in Austin, and will cover topics ranging from voting procedures to the Open Meetings Act.

It's a little late for the new Council members who had their first meeting on Nov. 20, and had over 500 pages of Council material to digest. Still, they did pick up some pointers from City Staff as they prepared for that big first Council meeting.

"We've already had a meeting with them, with the four new Council members," City Secretary Armando Chapa said. "We had a short orientation session. They will have another orientation session that we plan for in the next couple of weeks with the City Manager, and also with my office."

One important fact about the new Council members is that most of them had served on various boards and organizations and had a good knowledge of how Council worked.
