Better Business Bureau says Beware Cyber Monday Scams

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

It was supposed to be the online stores seeing heavy traffic on Cyber Monday, but beware: digital scam artists are also out there, looking to separate you from your money.

It is one of the biggest online shopping days of the year. Web sites offer free shipping, discounted merchandise and much more. The Better Business Bureau says there are some things you need to watch out for, especially deliveries and refunds that just seem too good to be true.

You should know what the return policies are before you buy anything online. Also, delivery seems to be the biggest problem the BBB sees every year, with online shoppers not getting their merchandise on time.

Christmas is already less than a month away, and federal law says that Web sites need to deliver within 30 days of the purchase. If the site doesn't say anything ,they have 30 days to get you your merchandise, but that could be too late for Christmas.

"Look for what they say about when they make the delivery," said Alan Bligh, regional director of the BBB. "If they can't make it, they have to inform you about when they can and give you the option of canceling."

Bligh said paying with a credit card is better than paying with a debit card. Credit cards give you all sorts of protections.

Make sure you are working with a trustworthy company. To check if the site you are about to buy from is not phony, go to www.bbb.org to see if they have had problems with the company in  the past.

On Monday, federal and European law officers collaborated their intel to seize more than 130 Web sites that were selling counterfeit merchandise online to consumers here in the U.S.
