Former City Manager Angel Escobar Passed Away

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Angel Escobar, former city manager and city engineer, passed away Tuesday. He suffered a heart attack a week ago, and was undergoing treatment at Christus Spohn Hospital Shoreline.

Escobar was just 66 years old, and was looking forward to enjoying a long retirement.

He had many friends, many who described him as mild-mannered, meticulous and, above all, a good man.

One of his closest colleagues was Corpus Christi City Secretary Armando Chapa.

"Beyond being a committed public servant, he was a good man. A hard worker," Chapa said. "Somebody who had strong principles and high moral values."

Chapa last met with Escobar the weekend before he took ill. They were golfing buddies, and their families often took vacations together. That's how Chapa learned more about his friend.

"You know, he came from very humble beginnings," Chapa said. "He was raised by his grandmother."

Escobar put himself through college, graduating from Texas A&I University in Kingsville. He even served in the Army Reserve, hand-in-hand with another friend and coworker, Nueces County Judge and former mayor Loyd Neal.

"He was a sergeant major in my unit back when I was in the Army Reserve," Neal said.

Neal said Escobar was a man of absolute integrity and character. "I'll miss Angel, and I'll miss his openness and his friendship more than anything," he said.

Escobar retired from the City in March of 2011 after serving two and a half years as city manager.
