If you are looking to make some extra cash for the holidays, listen up: online job offers are popping up everywhere, but you have to be careful.
Lt. M. Alaniz, financial crimes investigator with the Corpus Christi Police Department, has tips on what to look out for.
All of us could use a little extra cash this holiday season, and crooks take advantage of that.
Alaniz gets several calls every month from people who have been duped by online job offers. Those mystery shopper scams are the ones he sees the most.
Here's how it works:
You sign up and get a package in the mail. Inside is a MoneyGram with instructions to take it to the bank, cash it, keep a couple hundred for yourself and put the rest back in the mail; but there's a problem. Those MoneyGrams aren't legit, and by the time your bank notifies you, the money is long gone.
It really comes down to that old saying, "If it's too good to be true, it probably is."
Always do your research, and never accept or send cash to someone you don't know.
