TAMUCC to Research Sport Fish in the Western Gulf of Mexico

Posted: Updated:

The lack of rain is affecting not just us humans, but also inshore and offshore sport fish.

Diminished freshwater, habitat loss due to coastal development, and increasing pressure form commercial fisheries is making it a challenge for maintaining a healthy water population.

So on Thursday, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi announced that they will be the first research center to study sport fish in the western Gulf of Mexico.

"Well this is real big for the university, and sport fishing in the Coastal Bend, this activity of sport fishing really drives a lot of our coastal economy, and economy statewide," said Greg Stunz of TAMUCC's Harte Research Institute.

The Harte Research Institute and the Coastal Conservation Association donated a total of $800,000 to support the research.
