Students Participate in Lighting of the Trees at Taft City Park

Posted: Updated:
TAFT (Kiii News) -

Everyone is getting in the Christmas spirit, but one school district is using the holidays to get students to work on their writing for the big state exam.

Kiii News Reporter Anayeli Ruiz went Live from Taft to explain what they are doing, and how they will also help feed the hungry.

The first annual Lighting of the Trees took place at Taft City Park on Friday. Students from fourth, seventh and ninth grades have decorated over 30 trees. Each of the trees has a different theme.

The students not only decorated the trees, but they also have to write about the different themes. It is preparing the students for the writing portion of the STARR test that they will take this year.

The community was invited to head out there and vote to pick out their favorite trees. In order to vote, they took a canned good or donation and placed it under their favorite tree. The tree with the most goods is the winner.

All of the donations go to the Taft local food bank.
