SAN ANTONIO (Kiii Sports) - Just like the night before, only one area team survived Saturday's high school playoff action, and it took a miracle touchdown to do it.
The Flour Bluff Hornets got a touchdown with five seconds to go as Kolton Mims found Will Mendiola on 4th and 20 to stun sixth-ranked Leander 29-27. The Hornets are now 13-0 and on to the 4A-II State Quarterfinals, both for the first time in school history. They'll take on Leander Rouse Saturday at 7 pm at Texas State's Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos, TX.
G-P had a shot to make it an all-area state quarterfinal, but couldn't do much on either side of the ball in a 44-7 loss to Rouse. The Wildcats fell behind in the first half 21-0 and couldn't get on the board until the final minute of the game with a Devin Bisby touchdown.
The Orange Grove Bulldogs couldn't get much going either in a 42-0 loss to Bellville. The Bulldogs were without senior quarterback Ruben Lopez who was out with a knee injury. Freshman Hondo Harris stepped in, but was ineffective in the redzone, tossing two goal line interceptions in the first half. The c0-district champion Bulldogs end their season at 11-2.
Flour Bluff and Refugio are the only are teams to advance to the state quarterfinals next week.
