Last week, a horrific video of a teenager getting bullied and beat up at Cunningham Middle School was uploaded to the Internet, and many are in an uproar about it.
An anti-bullying rally was held Monday morning at Cunningham Middle School to bring awareness to the growing problem of bullying.
Kids chanted "no more bullying" in hopes of putting a stop to the bullying problem, but last week it was a different story. 13-year old Alyssa was beat up by another student at her school. The girl had been bullying Alyssa for quite some time.
"Honestly, I don't know what I did wrong to get bullied," Alyssa said.
The bully had threatened Alyssa not to tell anyone. As you can imagine, Alyssa was frightened and chose not to reach out for help.
"She threatened to kill me, and I didn't want to speak up to anybody," Alyssa said.
Friends of Alyssa are upset that no one stood up for her.
"Everyone was just there watching, and nobody helped her," one of her friends said. "But if I was there I would have helped her."
That was the purpose of the rally, put on by Alyssa and her friends and family.
Alyssa said it wasn't easy to face the crowd. She hopes that, through her pain, other kids who might be in the same situation will seek help.
"If other people are being bullied right now in school, I want them to speak up and tell the teachers, because it shouldn't happen to anybody," Alyssa said.
"Bullying is bad and they need to stop it," said one of her classmates.
"She is our friend," a student said. "It's not right to bully. It's mean."
"Something needs to be done," said Deidra Garcia, a concerned parent. "Bullying needs to stop. Nobody is doing anything about it."
In the meantime, Alyssa will not return to Cunningham. She will enroll in another school.
The Corpus Christi Independent School District said that their investigation is ongoing. Disciplinary action has been taken, and due to federal guidelines, they could not release that information.
CCISD police said that the bully could face criminal charges, and the Alyssa's family said they did hire an attorney.
