CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A healthy tamale may sound like a contradiction, but it turns out it is actually possible.

The Food Bank of Corpus Christi hosted a Tamalada, or tamale-making party, at the Garcia Education Center on Agnes Monday night.

Folks were taught how to make healthier tamales, a recipe especially aimed a diabetics.

So how exactly do you make a healthy tamale? Get rid of the bad fat.

"Our tamales are made with ground turkey, and instead of the lard, we do olive oil, and a low-sodium chicken broth instead of the traditional lard and extra fat. Ours are healthier," Dietitian Kate Hilliard said. "About a hundred calories per tamale."
