Police Arrest Suspect in Downtown Assault

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Police have arrested the suspect in the brutal Chaparral Street fight that left one young man in serious condition.

Victor Pedro Perez, 23, was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon. Police said tips to Crime Stoppers and social media websites helped track him down.

A video of the fight sparked outrage in the community. 25-year old Erik Schwirtlich is seen bumping into Perez, resulting in the assault that left Schwirtlich unconscious.

"As a parent, it would be very hard to see that video, to see your son assaulted," said Sr. Officer Julia Hernandez-Garcia of the Corpus Christi Police Department. "But it's also a good tool for the community to get involved and stand up against crime. That's one of the great things about Crime Stoppers and the social media. It is helping detectives solve crimes."

Perez has been charged with aggravated assault. He remains in the Nueces County Jail with a bond set at $200,000.
