Top Five Scams to Watch Out for this Holiday Season

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

According to the Better Business Bureau, while the holiday season can bring out the best in people, it can also bring out criminals who are after your money.

The most popular scam going on right here in the Coastal Bend is something called a "delivery scam," and it's a clever one.

"This time of year, people want or are expecting packages," said Alan Bligh, regional director of the BBB. "Maybe someone's sending a gift."

That's why it's not unusual to get one of those cards on your door, saying an unsuccessful attempt was made to deliver a package to your home, and directing you to call for more details. When you call the number, you get a recorded message, or are kept on hold for 15-20 minutes.

Turns out, you just called a foreign country.

"You don't realize it, but you just you've just called Jamaica, and you're on long distance waiting for ten, twenty minutes for someone to come back on," Bligh said. "And you're going to get a thousand dollar plus phone bill."

That scam is at the top of the list. The second most popular scam this year is the holiday e-card scam.

Number three are the fraudulent web sites. Be on the lookout for fake web sites offering bargain prices. If the price sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Finally, phishing emails and the fake job scam are both attempts to steal your identity.

The key to avoiding all of these is to do your research before you donate to a non-profit or charity. Check out the organization before you send them your money; and most importantly, never give out account numbers, Social Security numbers or any other type of sensitive information online or over the phone.
