Shop with a Cop Program Visits Wal-Mart on Greenwood

If you happened to be inside the Wal-Mart at Greenwood on Thursday, you may have noticed a lot of law enforcement officers inside.

No need to worry, though; they were just doing a little bit of shopping with some newfound friends.

Some lucky kids from surrounding school districts spent their morning shopping with a cop, for everything from toothbrushes to new shoes. The Shop with a Cop program is dedicated to helping kids whose Christmas might not be as bright as others.

"Yeah, he's awesome," said Arianna Alaniz from Los Encinos Elementary. "It's really an honor to shop with a cop."

"She's an awesome little girl, and it's been fun shopping with her," said Senior Officer Javier Cantu of the Corpus Christi Police Department.

Officers from several local departments took part in the event, including the Department of Public Safety, the Three Rivers Police Department and even some Texas Game Wardens.

"Oh, I enjoy it," Texas Game Warden Jimmy Lindsey said. "Taking a kid out shopping like this, for shoes, toys; makes my day."

Lindsey spent most of the morning with Ruben Hernandez from Rose Shaw Elementary. Hernandez, who can only be described as "a man of few words," was excited to mark off one of the few things on his Christmas list.

"Some shoes, clothes, a Spurs shirt, because of my grandfather," Hernandez said.

The Shop with a Cop program has only a couple more days to go, but already organizers are calling it a success.
