Kleberg County Courthouse Closed Due to Busted Sewer Line

Posted: Updated:
KLEBERG COUNTY (Kiii News) -

The Kleberg County Courthouse had to be shut down on Thursday after a sewer line busted.

The busted line sent a bad odor throughout the courthouse. County Judge Juan Escobar said the odor began to make people sick and vomit, including pregnant women.

The sewer line that busted from the inside was on the east side of the County Courthouse. It busted around 7:30 a.m. The county judge and county commissioners decided to close the courthouse just before 9 a.m.

"It goes back to the old structure that we have, that I've been saying we need to, we need to do something about this courthouse," Escobar said. "But again, the issue is money. We don't have money right now."

Escobar said the courthouse has problems with its infrastructure, drainage and sewers, and that he's hoping the state of the courthouse will be addressed in an upcoming bond issue election in May.
