CCPD Holiday Patrol Initiative Helped Catch Stabbing Suspect

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A 76-year old man was killed Saturday inside a restroom at Sunrise Mall. The suspect, 39-year old George Viera, allegedly tried to rob the victim before the stabbing him.

Viera is in jail facing capital murder charges. Police were able to arrest him within minutes of the crime, and they say the quick response was thanks to their Holiday Initiative.

The strategy is to put additional officers in areas where they know there will be traffic issues and shoplifting thefts around the holidays; places like malls.

"It's tragic," CCPD Commander Todd Green said. "It's horrible, but we do have plenty of officers out there that try to make sure that everyone has a safe holiday."

The Holiday Patrol Initiative started on Thanksgiving and will go on through New Years Day.
