City Eliminates Three-Day Waiting Period for Pet Adoptions

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The City of Corpus Christi is looking to do away with a three-day waiting period when adopting a puppy or kitten.

The young animals placed in kennels for three days, waiting for an owner to pick them up, are at an increased risk of getting sick during that waiting period because their immune system is not fully developed.

"You're not going to see a six-week old puppy wandering the streets as a stray, so these are animals brought in because they're no longer wanted," said Cheryl Martinez, an Animal Control Advisory Committee member. "So you want to be able to get them into homes and not have to euthanize them."

City Council signed off on the measure during a first reading of the ordinance on Tuesday.
