TxDOT Warns Drivers to Use Caution in Work Zones

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The Texas Department of Transportation is urging drivers to use extra caution in roadway work zones this holiday season; not just for the safety of workers, but also for drivers.

TxDOT officials offered some helpful tips in a press conference Friday.

"Wear your seat belts. Make sure we put the cell phone away so we are not distracted. Of course, never drink and drive, and pay attention in work zones," said John Barton, deputy executive director of TxDOT. "We have a lot of work going on across the state of Texas, and as these upcoming holiday season travels start to begin, we just want to make sure everybody remembers slow down in those work zones. Pay attention and protect yourself and others while you're traveling on the highways."

TxDOT officials say that in 2011, there were nearly 15,000 crashes in roadway construction and maintenance zones in Texas, resulting in 116 fatalities.
