Smoldering Lakebed Fire Reignites, Destroys Two Vacation Homes
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -
Residents in the Hideaway Hills Community at Lake Corpus Christi remain on high alert after a Christmas Day fire destroyed two homes and scorched several acres.
The blaze actually began on Thanksgiving in the now dried up Lake Corpus Christi. It has been smoldering ever since because firefighters were unable to reach it.
Now, when the latest cold front blew through, strong winds sparked up embers and the fire was off and racing again. The neighborhood off of County Road 392 was evacuated as firefighters tried to control the flames. Unfortunately, two vacation homes in the path of the fire have been destroyed.
The homes are about 2-3 miles apart. Right now, the fire is under control, but residents fear it could spark up again.
The Swinney Switch Volunteer Fire Department received assistance from at least a dozen other fire agencies.
