Health officials say speeding up the metabolism is important to weight loss, and there are certain foods you can eat to do just that.
First, eat breakfast.
"After a night's sleep, when your body is burning calories and working hard to keep you alive while you sleep, you need to fuel it the next day," Registered Dietitian Kristin Kirkpatrick said. "You need to 'break that fast.'"
Kirkpatrick said foods that are high in fiber, such as whole grain cereal, or something high in protein like eggs, are great choices. Eggs help reduce cravings.
"If you don't do that, your body essentially says, 'Okay, I don't have the fuel I need to function, so I am going to have to lower the metabolism a little bit to survive,'" Kirkpatrick said.
Drinking water helps boost the metabolism by increasing cell metabolism. Shellfish are full of iron, which carries oxygen to the muscles necessary in burning fat. And beans are a great way to jump start your metabolism.
"Beans have something called resistant starch, which is starch that is a little bit more difficult for our body to digest," Kirkpatrick said. "So the more difficult it is for our body to digest something, the more energy it's going to take to actually do that."
Finally, Kirkpatrick said that jalapeno peppers can boost your metabolism. One study shows this food increases fat oxidation, especially around the belly.
