CCISD Students Recycle Plastic Bags in Competition

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Some school kids are making a big difference in our community as they help to take thousands of plastic bags off the streets.

Third-grade students at Evans Elementary took a load of plastic bags to their school principal's truck, which will then take them to be recycled. The school is one of 19 Corpus Christi Independent School District Schools that are competing to see who can collect the most plastic bags.

Students from Mrs. Wilson's class collected the most bags last week, and ended up getting a pizza party out of the deal.

"Sometimes people were having a picnic at the park, and I would ask them for their bags and they say sure, and that's how I collect bags," third-grader Joanne Lane said. "And it's pretty easy because they are everywhere. You can find one even sitting down."

So far, Evans Elementary has collected over 8,000 bags. The competition ends on Earth Day, April 22.

Members of a homicide survivors support group spent much of the day at the Marina Village RV Park in Flour Bluff where the crime took place. The group was there trying to console those neighbors who remain in shock. Luci McGuire told 3 News reporter Bill Churchwell, "right now they are all scared. Thi...More >>
