Islander Women Come Up Short Vs. SFA

Junior Brandi Huff registered a career-high 15 points and senior Jessica Jammer chipped in 10 points but the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Women's Basketball team (1-12, 0-2 SLC) couldn't overcome an early deficit, falling 66-47, to Stephen F. Austin (6-8, 1-2 SLC) Monday night at the American Bank Center.

Jammer recorded her fourth straight double-figure scoring game and led the Islanders' glass with seven rebounds. Freshman Janae Blount added eight points and senior Verne'qua Taylor tallied four assists, three steals and grabbed five rebounds.

The Ladyjacks were powered by three players in double figures, led by Tierany Henderson's and Porsha Roberts' 17 points apiece while Antionette Carter added 12 points. Carter and Roberts led the boards with eight apiece.

Stephen F. Austin jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Islanders pulled within two with two free throws by Jammer. The Ladyjacks however extended the lead to 20-8 on a 9-0 run before Blount got on board with a jumper. After back-to-back baskets by the Ladyjacks, Taylor tallied two points to pull the Islanders within 12. After Huff sank a free throw, SFA put together a 9-2 run to end the half.

The Ladyjacks headed into the locker room with a 33-15 halftime lead on 56.5 percent shooting from the field. Huff led the Islanders with five points and Blount added four. Henderson paced SFA with 14 points, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc and Roberts added seven points and five rebounds.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi gained momentum out of the half and out rebounded the Ladyjacks' 22-18, including 11-4 on the offensive end. SFA outscored the Islanders just 33-32 in the second half. The Islanders capitalized on 14 second-chance points and outscored SFA 26-18 in the paint. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi ended the second half on a 7-2 run but it wasn't enough as SFA sealed its first conference victory of the season.

The Islanders will continue Southland play on Thursday, Jan. 10, when they travel to McNeese State to take on the two-time defending conference tournament champion.
