TAMUCC Library Addition Announced in Honor of Hector P. Garcia

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The daughter of Dr. Hector P. Garcia made a big announcement Tuesday at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, launching a major initiative in the memory of her father.

Garcia was remembered for his service to this community, but the big announcement was the development of an additional wing to TAMUCC's library, which will later be dedicated to the late civil rights pioneer.

The announcement was made on what would have been the Garcia's 99th birthday.

"That's why Jim and I decided that we need to do this for him, and it's something that I can leave for the next generation," said Cecilia Garcia-Akers, daughter of Hector P. Garcia. "I think we have made a good start here in Corpus Christi."

Funds for the new library wing will be raised through a foundation formed by Cecilia and her husband, Jim Akers.
