Conference Held to Discuss School Shooting Safety Protocols

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

It is a horrible thought, but the question has been on the minds of school personnel, parents and even students: What would happen if a local school became an active shooting scene?

A special conference aimed at giving school personnel some expert advice took place Wednesday at the Del Mar College Economic Development Center.

The event was planned well before the Connecticut shootings, and before that deadly rampage happened, organizers say there was not much interest in the subject; but on Wednesday, over 100 people showed up to the conference.

People were there to find out what to do if someone with a gun shows up to a school and starts shooting.

Corpus Christi Independent School District Police Chief Kirby Warnke talked to the group about legal issues like plans of action for an active shooter that schools are required by law to have in place. Other experts talked about children suffering from post-traumatic stress after a shooting event.

The Corpus Christi Police Department gave the school personnel warning signs to look for in kids who might end up bringing a gun to school. They also went over explosive chemicals and devices that could be brought to class which should raise alarm.

School officials from Jim Wells and San Patricio counties were there, as well as those from the CCISD, Flour Bluff and Calallen.

Two women who work at the Annapolis Christian Academy spoke about what they hoped to learn from all this.

"We're concerned about school safety," said Martisha Liefer, athletic director of the Annapolis Christian Academy. "We want to make sure we're keeping our students and  parents as safe as absolutely possible. Certainly we've been discussing it amongst our administration, so we thought this would be a good step to sort of evaluate where our schools stand as far as security. We have had police officers come out and evaluate our campus, and give us some ideas on where we can improve."

"How do I as a first responder, the first one in the line, what can I do to stop the escalation of the action?" said Misty Anderson, school secretary at Annapolis Christian Academy. "And I'm still trying to figure that out."

Everyone also had a chance to talk with members of the bomb squad and try out their protective gear.

CCPD and Del Mar put on the event, and said it was the first of many similar conferences they plan on holding in the future.
