Blood Donations Dive in wake of Flu Outbreak

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The flu outbreak this season is affecting our local blood bank.

Representatives with the Coastal Bend Blood Center tell 3 News the month of January has been a particularly tough month. The flu has caused a dip in donations while the demand for large amounts of blood is up. Officials are urging anyone who is symptom free to donate.

"As long as you are symptom free. I mean, if you have any symptoms of the flu. Any cough or anything of that sort you won't be able to donate blood," said Leticia Mondragon, with the Coastal Bend Blood Center. "You have to be symptom free."

The blood bank needs at least 120 donors every day to meet area needs. January is national blood donor month.
