Sinton ISD Now Allowing Armed Security Officers on Campuses

Posted: Updated:
SINTON (Kiii News) -

In the wake of all the recent school shootings across the country, the Sinton Independent School District has decided to raise the bar and install a number of new security measures.

On Tuesday night, Sinton ISD's board of trustees took action to allow armed security officers on their campuses.

"This is a deal that's unprecedented," Armed Security Officer Rudolfo Maldonado said. "This is unheard of. Nobody's ever had armed security at schools, so we're taking this as serious as possible. We don't want to let the community down. We're here to protect the campuses in Sinton. We're going to do so, as best as we can."

Wednesday was their first day in Sinton schools. The officers are armed with a handgun, extra clips, a Taser, pepper spray, a baton and three sets of handcuffs. Sinton ISD is contracting with the Garza Security Company, a private entity out of Corpus Christi, to provide the officers.

The armed security officers will be in all four schools in Sinton, the two elementary schools, the middle school and the high school.

"We've always placed safety and security as our number one priority, but it's almost like it's on steroids now," Sinton ISD Superintendent Steve VanMatre said. "If there's an individual out there that is intent on doing harm, we want them to know that if they intend to do that harm in Sinton, they're going to be met with a gun."

The services of the armed security officers will also be retained for after-school programs. The officers say they are there for one reason and one reason only, and that is to protect the students.
