The mother of a 20-year old murder victim, who was savagely beaten to death last Sunday afternoon, said she hopes the man who was accused will get life in prison.
Lorraine Casares found the body of her 20-year old son, Michael Sandoval, in a garage apartment behind the family home on Wynwood Drive Sunday. She spoke to 3News on Thursday, holding on to the work shirt that her son had changed out of hours before he was murdered.
"I sleep with it," Casares said. "This is all he left me to hug. This is all he left me to hug, it's a shirt."
Police arrested 18-year old Mark Ramirez for the crime.
"I hope he gets life," Casares said. "I hope he gets life."
Casares said her son had been hanging out with Ramirez since they met about a month ago. She is not sure why they got into a fight, but she said there was another young man who witnessed the slugfest and tried to break it up, but he eventually gave up trying and left. The family wishes he had at least called the police, because Sandoval might still be alive if he had.
Sandoval's 14-year old sister, Brica Casares, said she misses her brother so much that she wrote him a letter on a poster board and put it up on the living room wall.
"I stay strong for my mom," Brica said. "I do it for her, because he's not here to take care of her anymore like he used to. I know he's in a better place. I know I'll have an angel watching me now."
Sandoval leaves behind a family not just in mourning, but one hoping for justice in the court.
