CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii Sports) - South Texas is always an explosion of high school baseball talent, and 2013 isn't expected to be any different.
Teams all around the area kicked off practice Friday, including the Carroll Tigers who check in at #4 in the state in the Class 5A rankings despite losing plenty of talent. The Tigers are having to replace the "big three" of Courtney Hawkins (drafted by the White Sox), O'Shea Dumes (signed with A&M-CC) and Michael Cantu (transferred to Moody).
Class 4A will be a major battle again as Calallen comes in as the top-ranked team in the state while archrival Moody starts the season ranked #6. The two are separated again after battling it out in district the last two years.
District mates Sinton and Robstown are both top 10 in Class 3A, making for an interesting 30-3A this season. The Pirates come in at #3 in the state while the Cotton Pickers are #6.
The local teams were shut out of the Class 2A rankings despite both Bishop and Refugio sporting quality teams again this season.
The Port Aransas Marlins are looking for a deep playoff run as they come in as the #3 preseason team in Class 1A.
