Kingsville Mayor says City Not Responsible for House Fire

Posted: Updated:
KINGSVILLE (Kiii News) -

Kingsville Mayor Sam Fugate said that the City had nothing to do with a devastating house fire that happened earlier this month on West Lee Avenue.

On Sunday, one of the owners of that house, Elisabeth Jones, said she and her husband may have been targeted because they were getting ready to file suit against the City. The couple said City employees went by their house and removed items from their yard and garage because the place was considered an eyesore.

Fugate said he is sorry the home burned down, but that the City had nothing to do with it. Fire investigators said the cause of the fire is still unknown.

"At this point, we're not seeing any clear indications of arson," said Chief Joey Reed of the Kingsville Fire Department. "There's always that possibility. That's why we're continuing to look into the matter, but all the things that we saw at the fire didn't look that way."

Reed said their initial belief was that the fire was electrical in nature, but he added that they are still waiting to make a final determination.
