City Partners with Workforce Solutions to Host Job Fair

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Getting back to work is easier said than done, if you ask those who have spent the last several months unemployed.

However, a career fair at Sunrise Mall on Wednesday gave job seekers some hope that they will be able to return to work. City jobs were up for grab, and people responded.

The job fair was put on by the City of Corpus Christi and Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend, attracting more than 200 job seekers.

Abel Herrera has attended one job fair after another. He is hoping that the third time is the charm.

"It's been tough. Been looking for work since November," Herrera said. "Also considering going back to college at Del Mar College."

Anne Fontenote is in the same boat. She recently moved from Austin to Rockport and cannot find work there, so she is trying in Corpus Christi.

"Looking for administrative office assistant. Really right now I'm open to anything in that field," Fontenote said.

It is the first time that Workforce Solutions has partnered with the City to fill positions. 15 different departments within the City are hiring, totaling 60 jobs in all. A water quality field tech, administrative assistant, airport dispatcher; those jobs attracted a crowd. So did jobs with in the police force and the streets department, full-time and part-time.

"The City of Corpus Christi had lost contact with Workforce Solutions," said Monika Delagarza of Workforce Solutions. "They were looking at their job openings, we need to fill some positions. Contacted us and asked how can we work together on this."

"It's good here," said Jonathan Earley, a local job seeker. "Outside of here, as far as hiring overnight, not so good."

Earley has been looking for the last four months. He remains confident that he will find something.

"It's all about the willingness," Earley said. "You've got to be willing to work or you are not going to get a job."
